Description of Hari Mandir

The Ras Mahotsav that has been held in the Nalbari district since the 19th century is linked to the history of the Nalbari Hari Mandir. The Hari Mandir's development has been a long, winding story. We should have to look at the history of the Ras Puja in Nalbari to learn more about the history of the Hari Mandir.

The Great Nalbari Hari Mandir Story

Under the direction of the then-Engineer Amar Kundu of the Nalbari Public Works Department (PWD), Veterinary Assistant Naren Basu, some locals Gadamalla Barua, Dandiram Mahajan, Rabi Mahajan, Tanuram Das, Keertiram Thikadar, Padmapani Dutta, and Bhairab Choudhury organized a gathering at the engineer Kundu's official residence in 1931. The Ras Puja at Nalbari was the topic of their meeting. Although they were unable to

hold Ras Puja the same year, they were able to do so the following year at the official residence of PWD Engineer Amar Kundu's free space. To organize the Puja, the Ras Puja Committee was established in 1933. The Ras Puja was held in public at the Hatkhola (old) of Nalbari that year, thanks to donations from the public. At that time, Ras Puja was a religious ceremony that lasted three days. After a few years, the Ras Puja gained popularity, necessitating the search for a larger venue for the event by its organizers. To ensure that the Puja would continue, the organizers and locals looked for a permanent public plot. Finally, with the grateful assistance of the then-Sub-Deputy Collector Krishna Ram Medhi, the permanent public plot at Dag No. 584 in Nalbari town was discovered. This is the plot that is still in use today. The revenue for the plot, which was privately owned, had been pending for many years. The plot was given to the Hari Mandir after a negotiation with the plot owner and Ras Puja friends, witnessed by the then-Mouzadar Pratap Narayan Choudhury. The four wooden posts of Shal, donated by Priyanath Kabiraz of Alengidal, served as the foundation for the Mandir—which is now known as the Old Mandir—in 1939.

After the Independence of India, the glance of Hari Mandir Nalbari

In 1946, the Ras Puja was moved from the old Hathkhola to the Hari Mandir plot. The late Damahuram Mahajan was primarily responsible for the construction of the older Hari Mandir, which was finished in 1965. In 1968, the Puja Mandap was built with his donation. Ras Puja's annual popularity increased with the passage of time, as did the Mandir's expansion. The Ras Puja festival moved quickly from Utsava to Mahotsava thanks to continued public interest, co-operation, and donations. The Ras Mahotsava was originally a three-day event, but in the decade of 1960, it became a five-day event, and in 1970, it became a seven-day event. The Ras Mahotsava festival is now being held over 11 to 15 days.
